Bathing around the World: Nea Kameni Spring, Santorini
The Nea Kameni Spring is just a stone’s throw from the stunning Santorini coast line. It’s a popular tourist day trip accessible by boat only and is right beside the active volcano which keeps it toasty warm.
It’s more of an alcove in the side of the volcanic island. The orange silty water that fills the recess spreads seaward and then mingles with the deep aqua marine water which is where we stop to anchor.
I launch myself into the crispy clear sea water (8m deep!) and swim like a wee little fish to the warmer spring water just fifty metres ahead. Edging toward the terracotta colour my feet start to touch the bottom and I’m aware of the muddy goodness squelching between my toes.
With coarse mud smeared all over my face I frolick in the shallows taking in the surrounds: there’s the tiniest little church grotto and WC (that’s posh talk for dunny) which is located way up high on the volcanic rocks (god forbid being in a rush to get there!).
It’s a short stint of sulphur-mineral bliss before Andreas, the rather muscular bronzed deck hand, promptly calls us back to the boat. My skin feels amazing and I’m utterly refreshed- all too ready to fill my tummy with saginaki and cactus cocktails.
Nea Kameni facts:
- The half or full day trips usually includes a tour of the volcano.
- The last volcanic eruption was in 1950.
- The spring water is rich in iron, manganese and sulphur
- The minerals from the spring can stain lighter fabrics so wear a dark swimming costume!
