Q & A with Kevin Murphy
What attracts you to hairdressing?
I just love the art of transformation. It gives me so much pleasure to be able to change and improve someone’s look through a hairstyle. I really do believe a person’s hair is their crowning glory and it has the power to make or break an image.
What's been the highlight of your career?
Launching my range of shampoos, conditioners and styling products in the USA has definitely been a recent highlight. The last two years have been so busy for me – KEVIN.MURPHY products are now stocked in over 500 salons throughout Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Hong Kong and Scandinavia but the great response I have had from the US this last month is really the icing on the cake.
Describe your personal fashion style.
I would say my style is ‘expensive casual’. I don’t like garments that are not cut well. I need the expert tailoring that an expensive item will give you. (And I can’t stand anyone wearing the same thing as me!)
When did you know that hairdressing was your future?
Right from when I was about 12 years old, I used to plan haircuts and give them to my friends. (This was not always successful – I have definitely improved a lot since then!)
Which celebs have you worked with?
Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, Rebecca Romijn, Selma Blair, Linda Evangelista, Monica Belucci and the gorgeous Minogue sisters to name (drop!) a few.
Whose hair would you love to do?
Beyonce – she is stunning and I could do so much with that amazing hair.
If you could fly at whim to any city, where would you go?
I feel like I already fly everywhere at a whim… my life is a plane ride! If I could be transported anywhere in a wink, it would have to be Madrid. The art galleries are amazing and it really is a city that never sleeps.
Who would you like next to you on the plane?
Nobody… I travel much better alone! Flying can be hell so I would rather stay in my own little bubble.
Which gadget can't you live without?
My lap top – I spend so much time travelling and out of contact on shoots so my laptop helps to keep me connected.
What causes or issues get you fired up?
Bad hair!
How different are you from five years ago?
I am much more focused and a lot calmer. I have learnt to keep my eye on the prize and I have found that it you don’t worry about all the little obstacles, they seem to magically go away.
